Traditional summer parties in honor of St. John the Sticking return to the beach of Manta Rota, between 27 and 31 August, with a program of entertainment including dances, concerts, a contest of fates, folklore and fire-of-artifice.
The highlight of the celebrations will be the customary “Holy Bath ‘on August 29, at 11:00 am, in full areal of Manta Rota.
The famous sea bathing is a meeting which is held annually on 29 August, marking the date on which, according to tradition, St. John the Baptist was beheaded. In bygone years, this was the day that the people coming from the Algarve hills moved to the beach, accompanied by its beasts of burden, to “bathe”.
